More in store: Paredes Line H-E-B undergoing Plus! treatment

To a certain segment of Brownsville’s population, the H-E-B grocery store at 2155 Paredes Line Road is the “Gucci B,” a nickname that reflects the higher end fare and amenities available there.

Now comes “Gucci B Plus!” — or as the company prefers it — H-E-B Plus!.

Crews have finished construction on a new parking lot and are proceeding with work on a 36,000-square-foot expansion encompassing the building’s north and south ends.

When complete, the store will cover roughly 110,000 square feet, according to Bob Tellez, H-E-B director of retail operations for the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Tellez, relatively new to Brownsville, confessed to being unaware of the store’s nickname, but found it flattering.

Beyond the obvious fact that the H-E-B Plus! will be larger than the existing facility, which was erected 14 years ago, the offerings will differ from traditional H-E-Bs, he said.

“You’ll have an entertainment department and you’ll see an expanded selection of general merchandise, as well as expanded offerings on the food side,” he said. “This store h

Deadine looms for businesses that have failed to register for VAT

Businesses that have reached the annual turnover threshold for VAT registration, which is £73,000 for the 2011/12 financial year, but have failed to register with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) must act quickly if they want the opportunity to limit hefty fines.

Such businesses have until 31 December, 2011 to register for VAT under HMRC’s VAT Initiative campaign.

The VAT Initiative, which HMRC launched earlier this year, offers VAT rule-breakers lower fines and a special plan to rectify their failure to comply with VAT rules.

HMRC identifying businesses failing to comply with VAT rules

HMRC is currently identifying businesses that have so far failed to come forward. The firms it contacts will be subject to substantially higher penalties and may even face criminal prosecution for their failure to register for VAT.

NFIB study: Top barriers to growth

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 22, 2011 — A new study examining impediments to growth in the small-business sector reveals that 72 percent of small-business owners would like to expand by adding employees within the next five years, but various impediments are currently standing in their way.

According to Growth – External Factors, a report prepared by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Research Foundation, uncertainty and weak sales are the two primary impediments to small-business growth.

“There is no question that small businesses are responsible for a significant portion of the job creation in our economy,” said William J. Dennis, report author and senior fellow at the NFIB Research Foundation. “Their growth and success is often contingent upon a litany of factors beyond their control – but within the purview of policy-makers in Washington. Impediments to growth may not be easily overcome, but if we are ever to bridge the gap between desired and actual growth, government officials must look at the problems small businesses face. Strong fundamentals fuel housing demand heading into 2012

It appears that, to date, the effects of the steady erosion of consumer confidence since May and the increasing concerns about the potential impact of the European sovereign debt crisis on global financial markets have not pulled the rug out from under Canadas housing market.

This observation is based on the healthy month-over-month increases in existing home sales and the concomitant stronger than expected pattern of housing starts in September and October.

Moreover, it suggests that the impact of historically low interest rates, strong growth of full-time employment through September and the effects of an increase in foreign investment in real estate is continuing to underpin housing demand heading into the new year.

Barring a major collapse of investor and/or consumer confidence triggered by rapid escalation of the European sovereign debt crisis, housing demand should continue to expand over the next few months despite the sharp drop in full-time employment in October for four specific reasons.

How Can You Improve Your Life With Lifestyle Design?

Lifestyle Design is the concept that you can become a digital nomad, literally working at whatever you do from anywhere in the world. This is a technology savvy approach that utilizes global connectivity to create a virtual office through which work is done no matter where the individual actually is or what he or she is currently doing.

On a smaller scale, some of the concepts can be used to improve productivity in a traditional setting, allowing workers to do more in less time. Because of the Internet culture that allows for increased networking, blogging, and exchange of ideas, concepts can be quickly moved from individual use to community use. This makes the location independent professional able to cut out broad areas of expense, like a permanent household, utility bills, car payments and insurance, and other things that are commonly thought of as necessary in favor of being able to travel at will and set up anywhere to complete the work at hand.

Part of this ability is using the Internet as a money making device.
