Is Multitasking Making You Fat?

Like that headline? Or I guess I could have said “Is Multitasking Hurting Your Business?” In last month’s USA Today Your Life section an article ran titled: Shifting focus a lot at work could wreck your diet. It discussed studies that were done showing that people who switch back and forth between tasks, therefore switching their mindset frequently, have less self-control when it comes to things such as controlling your temper, resisting cheating on your diet or even persisting in completing a difficult task.

As I’m writing this blog I can tell you I’ve stopped to check my email, attempted to log in to our email marketing program, and checked our business’s Facebook page. As a busy entrepreneur, I’m sure you’ve all experienced the feeling of ADHD and the inability to focus on one thing at a time. Do you feel like it’s hurt you ability to get things accomplished in a timely manner?

The article also addresses the problems that employees face when faced with smaller staff limitations. Whether you had to

What Did You Learn from the Last Sale You Lost?

My mom always used to tell me how we learn more in life from our failures than we do from our successes, yet for too many of us in sales this concept doesnt seem to sink in.

Ive lost plenty of sales in my life. If I wanted to get really down on myself, all Id have to do is take a piece of paper and start writing down as many as I could remember. If I wanted to go into a complete state of despair, all Id have to do is to write down next to each sale I lost the amount of commission I failed to receive because of the lost sale.

For this simple reason too many of us in sales choose not to dwell on what didnt happen. Instead, we merely move on.

Its much easier to move on than dwell on the past, and Im a firm believer that dwelling on the past doesnt do anyone any good. If you want to damage your sales motivation, go right ahead and dwell all you want.

As much as we cant dwell on the past, we do need to spend a few minutes doing an autopsy on the lost sale and learning from it.

Get your act together

Happy financial new year.

Cue the party hats. It’s almost a new financial year and David Potts has a few tips to steer you towards a wealth correction.

That New Year’s resolution has probably fallen by the wayside, so here’s another chance. A new financial year is about to begin, thank goodness.

This one has been nothing to write home about, that’s for sure. The super’s probably going backwards, along with the sharemarket and property prices; the job’s been getting tougher; and to top it all off, prices of things you can’t avoid are surging.

And the new financial year is off to a bad start with the flood levy, the prospect of higher interest rates and even bigger jumps in council and utility rates, not to mention food prices.

Can I make a suggestion?

Local biotech firm might get $824,000 in tax incentives

Rapid Pathogen Screening of Lakewood Ranch, or RPS, hopes to add 164 more highly paid workers with an average salary of $72,100, or about double the region’s average annual compensation.

To encourage the company to remain in the region, Sarasota County commissioners are scheduled Tuesday to consider committing a $164,000 local match as part of $820,000 in tax refunds.

RPS, which outsources its actual manufacturing, will be seeking to recruit scientists and business managers.

The company already markets a test to determine if a person has viral conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. Resembling a drugstore pregnancy check, the disposable screening device lets an eye doctor or clinic worker know the results in about 10 minutes.

But that is just the beginning, says Laura Lovejoy, the company’s business-development manager.

The U.S.
