How to Manage Your Cash Flow

Cash flow is the difference between inflows (actual incoming cash) and outflows (actual outgoing cash). Income is not counted until payment is received and expenses are not calculated until payment is made.

Not managing cash flow properly is one of those mistakes that can do a small business in, because if you fail to see a cash shortage coming and run out of money, you can be forced to stop operating.

So how do you avoid a cash crunch?

Food firm expansion could lead to exit from Brighton

An international food firm has warned it could have to quit Brighton and Hove because it is doing so well.

Infinity Foods says it needs to expand to meet demand and has put its giant warehouse complex in Norway Street, Portslade, on the market.

The workers’ cooperative, which has a shop in North Road, Brighton, is taking on more business from abroad and needed a larger site to increase the size of its manufacturing and distribution operation.

The warehouse in Portslade employs 50 people.

Spokesman Dominic Ferrari said: “We would love to remain in the Brighton area but realistically there is only one site suitable for us and if that does not work out we will have to consider moving further afield.”

Walden: Revamping county payments plan to create jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Greg Walden released the following statement following the House Natural Resources Committee’s hearing on draft legislation to increase active federal forest management, put Oregonians back to work in the woods, and create revenue for rural schools, first responders, and transportation budgets.

“The House Natural Resources Committee today took the first step toward developing a long-term sustainable solution for our rural forest communities. There is bipartisan agreement that the status quo doesn’t work. Counties don’t want a federal handout anymore. Oregonians want jobs back in their communities and forests that are actively managed instead of tied up in endless lawsuits.

“Unemployment remains at unacceptably high levels. Our federal forests are choked due to overgrowth and the resulting wildfire comes at extraordinary costs to federal taxpayers. Forest management is frozen on public lands, due in large part to endless litigation against productive use or maintenance of our renewable natural resources. It’s time t

Supermarkets start bagging self-serve checkouts

MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — When Keith Wearne goes grocery shopping, checking out with a cashier is worth the few extra moments, rather than risking that a self-serve machine might go awry and delay him even more.

Most shoppers side with Wearne, studies show. And with that in mind, some grocery store chains nationwide are bagging the do-it-yourself option, once considered the wave of the future, in the name of customer service.

“It’s just more interactive,” Wearne said during a recent shopping trip at Manchester’s Big Y Foods. “You get someone who says hello; you get a person to talk to if there’s a problem.”

Big Y Foods, which has 61 locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts, recently became one of the latest to announce it was phasing out the self-serve lanes. Some other regional chains and major players, including some Albertsons locations, have also reduced their unstaffed lanes and added more clerks to traditional lanes.

Market studies cited by the Arlington, Va.-based Food Marketing Institute found only 16 percent of supermarket transactions in 2010 were done at self-checkout lanes in stores that provided the option. T

Sussex legal firms braced for ‘Tesco law’

Scores of small independent solicitors across Sussex fear they could be driven out of business by supermarkets offering cut-price legal deals.

The new Legal Services Act, dubbed Tesco Law, will open the door for the likes of banks and supermarkets to enter the consumer law market in England and Wales for the first time.

Big brands, such as the Co-operative Group, will be able to offer legal services rather than having to outsource activities such as house purchases and small claims that are reserved for law firms or separate them financially as current law dictates.

Now, lawyers are bracing themselves for the big shake up.

Oliver Asha, a director at Acumen Business Law in Hove Street, Hove, said high street solicitors would have to specialise to survive.

He said: “Few things shake your cool, calm, collected high street lawyer, but the mere mention of Tesco Law sends them into palpations. Under the new rules, non-lawyers can own law firms. B
